After Protomartyr’s set at the Seaport, some of us hopped on the J Train to catch Montreal Best New Music recipients Ought at Baby’s All Right (part of their tour with LA’s Dub Thompson). The band get compared to early Talking Heads a lot, and its hard not to do that — frontman Tim Beeler has a very similar wide-eyed lyrical style and spazzy stage presence as David Byrne. But that stage presence is also pretty magnetic, his enthusiasm infectious, and his charms had the packed crowd eating out of his hand the whole time. Their album is good, but the live show is currently where it’s at.

We did not get there in time to see Modern Vices but we did catch Semi Femme, the new band from Leif Anders who you may remember from Orca Team. The trio’s two-bass-and-drums line-up is something you don’t see every day and made for a mercurial post-punk kind of sound. They’ve only played a handful of shows, so not bad at all for an early gig.

We skipped out early and missed headliners Dub Thompson (apparently we weren’t the only ones) but if you were there, how was their set? Pictures from Semi Femme’s set and more from Ought below…
