Mariachi Flor de Toloache

Patti Smith kept things fiery throughout her show at Damrosch Park for Lincoln Center’s ‘Out of Doors’ summer festival on July 20. She spoke out against those who suggest one of the presidential candidates should be “executed,” after someone tossed something onto the stage Smith said, “This isn’t the Republican Convention. Don’t throw shit on my stage.” and she even scolded someone who was in the pit in front of her before apologizing to the audience, “he just takes me away from you.”

New York’s Mariachi Flor de Toloache opened the evening to a packed house with a vibrant set before a small break to set up the stage for Smith and band. And when the poet of rage finally took the stage, her fans rushed up to the rail, packing in as close as possible to her as she began with a passage from her book Just Kids. With a tremendous set that included tributes to Amy Winehouse (“This is the Girl”) and Prince (“When Doves Cry”) (amongst others) plus amazing songs like “Because the Night” and “Power to the People”, Smith and her band rocked the night. Setlist and more pictures of Patti Smith’s Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival are in the gallery below

Patti Smith will be taking her “words and music” show on tour in Europe soon, as well as a show at Hollywood Bowl in LA with Bon Iver (tickets) and a show in Chicago on 12/30 where she’ll be playing Horses in full (tickets). Before the LA and Chicago shows, she’ll be back in NYC for the Brooklyn By The Book series on September 15 at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope (274 Garfield Pl) in support of her book M Train. Tickets for this reading and Q&A are on sale now.
