Patti Smith & surprise opener Michael Stipe played Webster Hall (pics, videos, setlist)

NYC’s Webster Hall is back and one of the first-ever shows at the newly-reopened venue — following two Rosalia shows, Jay-Z, and Dillon Francis — was local NYC legend Patti Smith. She played her first of two nights at the venue last night (5/1), and making the show even more exciting was a surprise opening set from R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe (who is no stranger to making surprise appearances with Patti Smith). He performed for about about 15 minutes, joined by Andy LeMaster, and he played what appeared to be three new songs. You can watch a short video clip of one below.

Before Stipe played, Patti’s daughter Jesse Smith and Rebecca Foon spoke on stage about their Pathways to Paris organization. After Stipe’s surprise set, Patti took the stage and did classics like “Redondo Beach,” “Pissing In A River,” “Because the Night,” and “Gloria” (joined by Jesse), as well as some covers like Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced?,” The Rolling Stones’ “I’m Free” (with Lenny Kaye singing), Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush,” and more. She brought Stipe and her daughter Jesse back on stage for the very last song, “People Have the Power.”

Pictures are in the gallery above. Videos and Patti’s full setlist below.

Patti does it again at Webster tonight, and tonight’s show is sold out. Will she have more guests in store at night two? If you have tickets, you might wanna get there early just in case.
