Paul McCartney brought out Neil Young, Rolling Stones covered Beatles, and more at Desert Trip (videos, setlists)
The first weekend of Desert Trip is now a wrap. This past Friday (10/7) through Sunday (10/9), The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) and The Who played the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio, CA, the same location of Coachella (and Stagecoach). The lineup and location earned this fest the not-exactly-flattering nickname of “Oldchella,” but it’s tough to hate on how much legendary talent played this thing, and how great of shape those guys are all still in as performers.
During Sir Paul’s set, he brought out Uncle Neil for the Beatles tunes “A Day in the Life” and “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?” — the latter of which Paul has never played live before — and Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance.” The Stones also did a Beatles tune, “Come Together,” though not with Paul or anyone else joining them (it was also the first time they ever covered it).
Those treats aside, we of course got tons of other classic songs at this whole fest. Everybody was playing the hits and revisiting their earliest eras, but not only sticking to nostalgia. Paul played the song he wrote with Rihanna and Kanye West.
