Pavo Pavo tell us their Top 10 LPs of 2016, play Landlady Holiday Spectacular tonight (w/ Lady Lamb & much more)
Brooklyn band Pavo Pavo released their debut album, Young Narrator In The Breakers, this year via Bella Union. It's fully of airy, arty pop (in the same sonic orbit as Dirty Projectors or San Fermin) and you can stream it, and check out the video for "Ruby (Let's Buy The Bike!)" below.
We've been asking artists for their Top 10 of 2016 lists and Pavo Pavo have given us theirs which includes Blood Orange, Cass McCombs, Weyes Blood, Andy Shauf and more. Check that our, with their commentary on each choice, below.
Meanwhile, the band have a few East Coast shows before the new year, including tonight (12/10) at The Bell House in Brooklyn as part of the annual Landlady Holiday Spectacular. Landlady's Adam Schatz has quite an extravaganza planned, with (deep breath) Chrome Sparks, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, Steve (of Delicate Steve), The Westerlies, Ex Reyes, Jeff Curtin & His Magic Theremin, Joanna Sternberg, and Uncivilized all playing, along with Landlady and something called "Crooklyn Rockers: A Very Natty Christmas." Tickets are on sale now, and all proceeds will be donated to We Make Noise, a Brooklyn-based organization offering free and sliding-scale music programming for youth of all ages through classes and workshops from Bushwick School for Music, New York City Rock Camp, and Music's Cool Music School.
Pavo Pavo also play Washington, DC and Philadelphia this week. Dates are listed below.
PAVO PAVO'S TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2016
Cass McCombs - Mangy Love
Such a cohesive record from the inimitable Cass, with hooks in each song that manage to be both understated and giant. "Medusa's Outhouse" is a fave.
David Bowie - Blackstar
The album got the most attention for its (amazing) biographical context, but it's also in our top three or four Bowie albums just for the music! Extremely mean rhythm section.
Anna Meredith - Varmints
Anna Meredith is such a creative and COOL composer from England. This record can switch on a dime from vocally-led pop music to knotty polyrhythms played by what sounds like three orchestras at once.
Porches - Pool
High school bud and spirit guide Porches strikes again with this beautiful and focused batch of songs, led by his most delicate vocal takes to date and and lots of slow, deep LFOs.
Weyes Blood - Front Row Seat to Earth
This record got maybe the most spins this year for us, it's already near and dear to our heart. It's so patient, and dramatic, and there's a musical surprise around every corner.
Andy Shauf - The Party
It's tempting to compare Andy Shauf to a few things - Harvest-era Neil Young, Death of a Ladies' Man-era Leonard Cohen, maybe some newer indie folk like Bahamas - but in the end it's just a little different! A folk rock band with spare rhythm section and loads of winds and strings - what's not to like?!
Angel Olsen - My Woman
I remember hearing "Shut Up Kiss Me" for the first time driving through Vermont, and I thought, "Yeah, she's gone and done it." The beautiful intention and spirit and aesthetic of her first record shone through, but this one has a different kind of razor-sharp songwriting.
Uni Ika Ai - Keeping a Golden Bullseye in the Corner of My Mind
Maia from Bobby and Pete from Lucius have joined up to make a truly awesome, hazy, poppy debut - we've played five or six shows with them and gone to see five or six more - can't get enough of these f***ing songs!
Sam Evian - Premium
Along with Uni Ika Ai, this is a debut from our community this year that was such a triumph for the team. Recorded at Figure 8 in Prospect Heights with a bunch of close friends (and old Pavo bandmates!), it makes such lovely and tasteful use of all kind of guitar-led psychedelia.
Blood Orange - Freetown Sound
The new Blood Orange record is a real LP - it works on all levels of zoom. It seems like he worked from the top down, laying out the sequence of tracks and special guests and found-sound clips, then populating them with music. And the whole bouquet ends up feeling like the Village on a Thursday night.
