petition asks to have a heavy metal element on the periodic table named after Lemmy (whose funeral will be live-streamed)

Lemmy w/ Motörhead in Austin, 2015 (more by Tim Griffin)
Lemmy Motorhead

Heavy rock lost its most iconic figure over Christmas with the sudden and unexpected death of Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister. Lemmy was a force of nature and the very essence of heavy metal. We believe it is fitting that the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry recommend that one of the four new discovered Heavy Metals in the Periodic table is named Lemmium. An astrological object (a star) has been named Lemmy to meet the IUPAC naming recommendations. – [Change.org]

Having a heavy metal element named after Motörhead’s Lemmy does seem appropriate. They’re within 10,000 votes of the 50,000 needed to to make it official as of this posting. Sign the “Lemmium” Change.org petition here. [Via Dangerous Minds]

UPDATE: Didn’t happen.

In other news Lemmy’s funeral is this Saturday (1/9) in Los Angeles and will be live-streamed on YouTube. From Motörhead’s Facebook page:

We want you ALL to be a part of this memorial service, so wherever you are, PLEASE get together and watch with fellow Motörheadbangers and friends. GO to your favorite bar, or your favorite club, make sure they have access to an internet connection and toast along with us. Or simply invite your pals around and celebrate Lemm’s life at home.

The live-stream starts at 3PM PST. In Los Angeles, there will be day-long celebrations at clubs The Roxy and the Whisky a Go Go.
