Phil Anselmo filling in for Mike Williams with Eyehategod at Gwar-B-Q

In a classic case of one NOLA dude looking out for another NOLA dude, Pantera/Down/Scour/Housecore Records/everything’s Phil Anselmo is filling in with the sludge lords Eyehategod at their upcoming Gwar-B-Q set. This is coming about because Eyehategod frontman Mike “IX” Williams is having health problems that prevent him from performing. He’s struggled with his health in the past, having had to cancel dates with Corrections House back in 2014. As anyone who has seen Eyehategod live knows, Mike does not take it easy at those shows by any stretch of the imagination, so hopefully he gets well soon and can get back to touring (like perhaps in time for their tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust).

In the meantime, musically speaking, Phil Anselmo should be a pretty solid replacement. Phil has been at the center of a lot of controversy following his racist comment at last year’s Dimebash show. Ansemlo said the following:

When our brothers in one of New Orleans’ most influential music outfits needs me, I’m there, 1000%. There is no secret that I adore my brethren in Eyehategod, as I’ve always supported them through thick and thin. This present situation will be no different. In light of Michael D. William’s health issues, which he needs to address more importantly than any other point in his life, and should be respected by anyone with a heart, I will do my best to fill in for him. Those are mighty big shoes to fill, but I shall do my best, once again. I do believe I speak on behalf of the concerned parties when I state that we ALL NEED Mike IX Williams to heal, recover, and get better ASAP. These gigs are NOT about me; it is about keeping the obligations of EHG so, as a band and force, they are able to stay true to their commitments to these two gigs. My admiration of Mike and all his works, especially EHG, knows zero boundaries, hence, me doing these gigs. Here’s to Mike’s recovery, and here’s to supporting these shows on his behalf. Much love to everyone.

Mike IX also approves of the decision: “Phil has my full blessing for these shows and, with all forces willing, I will return to the stage as soon as I am physically able.”

The rest of the Gwar-B-Q lineup is typically loaded, with the soon-to-break-up Dillinger Escape Plan, American Nightmare, Against Me!, and more. Tickets for that are on sale now.
