Phish covered Fleet Foxes & Neil Young at "powdery" MSG show (videos, setlist)

Phish continued their “Baker’s Dozen” run at Madison Square Garden last night (7/26). Each show is accompanied by a different donut flavor, and the setlists includes covers to match the theme of the night. Last night’s flavor was “powdered” and Phish began their set with an a cappella rendition of Fleet Foxes‘ snow-referencing “White Winter Hymnal” and closed with a cover of Neil Young‘s “Powderfinger.” Watch videos of both of those covers and see the full setlist below. They also did covers of Ween and Zeppelin, and they broke out Prince’s “1999” for the first time since New Year’s Eve of that year. Via JamBase:

Out of nowhere Trey kicked into “1999” by Phish, a Prince cover the band famously played in the same building to open their December 31, 1998 performance and never touched again…until Thursday night. The 524-show bust out received a hero’s welcome at MSG.

As if it wasn’t enough that Phish dusted off “1999,” they also extended it with the third outrageous jam of the set. The quartet took “1999” deep with a bout of improv that explored various jam spaces before working to yet another powerful, crowd-pleasing climax. Fifteen glorious minutes of “1999” gave way to “Steam.” After fitting just three songs into the set’s first 45 minutes, Phish also extended “Steam” with a “Type II” jam that dove into Pink Floyd-esque soundscapes. The dream closing frame continued with a triumphant cover of Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter” and concluded with a romp through “Character Zero.” Both “Steam” and “No Quarter” contain mentions of “snow” in the lyrics keeping in tune with “powdered” theme.

The run also included “coconut” on night 1, “strawberry” on night 2, “red velvet” on night 3 (two Velvet Underground covers included), and “jam-filled” on night 4. Previous night recaps and videos of Velvet Underground covers HERE. The “Bakers Dozen” run takes tonight off and continues on Friday (7/28), with six more shows after that.
