Ty Segall & The Muggers @ Baby's All Right 2/11/2016
"I ripped my pants...do you want to see it?" Ty Segall was in a mischievous mood Thursday night (2/11) at Baby's All Right and yes the crowd did want to see it. Earlier, he and his new band The Muggers played The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and decided, apparently last minute, to play a show while here. Billed as another of Baby's "secret shows," it was free... and didn't start till after 2 AM.
The band set up while Blonde Redhead were still DJing their afterparty and pretty much hopped on stage as soon as they got their DJ gear off stage, opening with a ragged, spirited cover of The Door's "L.A. Woman." That set the tone for the 45-minute set: a loose and anything goes. Part of that may have been from Ty being in pure frontman mode, focusing on the crowd and not an instrument. I have seen wilder Ty Segall shows, but never one where he offered shots of tequila to the crowd baby bird style, right out of his mouth. It was that kind of night.
He and the band, which includes Mikal Cronin, King Tuff, Cory Hanson and Evan Burrows of Wand, and Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang, were dressed in glammy theatrical makeup (somewhere between Alice Cooper and Phantom of the Paradise) and played the bulk of Emotional Mugger new songs, and wrapped up the night with a doomy take on The Beatles' "I Want You / She's No Heavy."
Ty Segall & The Muggers will be be back in NYC in a couple weeks when their tour officially swings through for two shows at Webster Hall. The 2/27 show with CFM and Axis: Sova is sold out but tickets are still available for the 2/28 show with The Men, and Dion Lunadon.
