Pieta Brown made an album w/ Bon Iver’s S. Carey, touring w/ Ani DiFranco
Folk/Americana musician and songwriter Pieta Brown is releasing a new album, Freeway, on September 20 via Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records. As Stereogum points out, Pieta recorded the album live at Justin Vernon's Wisconsin studio with Bon Iver member S. Carey co-producing and performing on the songs (she previously collaborated with Justin on "Flowers of Love" from her 2014 album Paradise Outlaw, too). "Pieta has such a unique vibe," Carey said. "I really loved her other records and I really like her approach. The recording process was super eye opening and really fun for me because it was different from the way I’ve done a lot of things, in the sense of recording live as a band."
New single "Ask for More" is a stripped down folk song with gentle instrumentation. "This was the first song we recorded," Pieta says. "Jeremy [Ylvisaker, guitarist] had to arrive late to the session so it was just me and Sean and Mike [Lewis, bassist] when we started. We got set up and I wanted to start right in to a song to see what kind of music / connections might happen since we hadn’t all played together before, and since I hadn’t sent the players any demos. I played the song a couple times through (just acoustic) for Sean and Mike and then told them a little bit about my sonic vision for this song (sparse yet layered/ piano / traces of saxophone/ and a long instrumental outro) and we began experimenting. This version of the song landed quickly...once we got this take we added a few layers and Jeremy arrived and added his subtle atmospherics. And Sean’s harmonies added a very luminous layer. (With a call and response kind of feel, but with no words!) We recorded the rest of the songs (which became the album) like this – experimenting song by song – over the next 2 & 1/2 days. Through that process a natural rapport developed with Sean and by the time we were done mixing it felt like he was a co-producer, both by being easy to talk to about my ideas, and by offering his ideas as well." Listen to it, and previous single "Morning Fire," below.
Pieta is touring through November in support of her new album, and some shows are with her label's head honcho Ani DiFranco. See all of her upcoming dates below.
