Pixies announce new album 'Head Carrier', share “Um Chagga Lagga”
Following a decade of touring without new material, a reunited Pixies released Indie Cindy in 2014, their first “new” album since 1991’s Trompe Le Monde, though it was really just a compilation of the band’s previously released EP1 and EP2, and the then-new EP3.
Now, the Pixies have announced Head Carrier, a new 12-track LP out September 30 and available for preorder now in a variety of formats and bundles. The band recorded the album at RAK Studios in London with producer Tom Dalgety following six weeks of writing, arranging and rehearsing. Head Carrier‘s first single, “Um Chagga Lagga,” is streaming below alongside the album’s artwork and tracklist. Pixies will be embarking on European tour dates with the promise of a world tour to come. Those dates are below as well.
Head Carrier, which was conceived as a full album, is also the first to feature Paz Lenchantin who is now the band’s official bassist. After a very brief tenure, Kim Shattuck of The Muffs was replaced as touring bassist by Lenchantin in 2013. Lenchantin, who previously played in The Entrance Band, Zwan, and A Perfect Circle, is now a permanent member of the group taking over the spot previously occupied by founding member Kim Deal. Deal has had a famously rocky relationship with Pixies frontman Black Francis and departed the group in 2013. She is now working on the first new Breeders‘ album since 2008.
“I was very nervous in the beginning when I went to that first rehearsal,” Lenchantin said in a press release. “There were these shoes I felt I had to fill and I tried to do the best I could for the fans, to make the live performances sound true to the originals. I spent three years learning to understand what being a Pixie meant, and now, my heart, spirit, and love for their music is embedded in me and I feel like I have become a Pixie. We had been more about the history of the Pixies, but now, we are about going forward.”
