Pixies played new songs and the classics at surprise LA show (setlist & videos)

Pixies

The reunited Pixies had been pretty quiet since the end of their 2011 tour, but a lot’s been happening over in their world lately. First they lost bassist/backing vocalist Kim Deal only to soon release their first new song in almost a decade. It was then announced that Kim Shattuck of The Muffs would take Deal’s place in the band and that they’d be touring (including Riot Fest Chicago and four sold-out NYC shows). Then out of nowhere, they dropped a surprise four-song EP (which Pitchfork just gave a 1.0, what did you think of it?).

The new lineup has been rehearsing for their tour in LA, and as Slicing Up Eyeballs reports, they played a surprise show there at The Echo on Friday (9/6). The band played a 26-song set which included tons of old favorites from all four full lengths (and Come On Pilgrim), with the most coming from Surfer Rosa. They also played “Bagboy,” three of the four songs on EP-1, two unreleased new ones (“Blue Eyed Hexe” and “Greens and Blues”), and their covers of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On” and Neil Young’s “Winterlong.”
