Portishead

With a new album reportedly coming out in April 2008, Portishead are officially back in action. They proved that this weekend by playing not one, but two reunion shows at the ATP Festival in Minehead (Dec 8-9, 2007). Portishead also curated the shows that included Aphex Twin, GZA, OM, Oneida, A Hawk & A Hacksaw, Boris, Black Mountain and many others. BV correspondent Zach Dilgard was on hand to take pictures. He caught the second Portishead show (night two), and he had this to say….

everyone was amazing. Portishead played about 1/2 old stuff and 1/2 new material. all of the new songs were monstrous.

aphex twin played a solid 2 hours with material i’ve never heard before. everyone was dancing like crazy… the floor was literally shaking the whole two hours from everyone bouncing.

Portishead are back from their self imposed hiatus, curating the ATP Festival in Minehead. Problem is, they’ve picked far too many good bands to play in direct competition to themselves. [Strange Glue]

So after ten long years (not counting the Bristol tsunami benefit concert), Portishead completed their first full set in nearly a decade. Beth, clearly overcome by the reaction of the audience, jumped down to thank them. Then realising she was a bit short to climb back onstage, she had to seek help from those around her to get back up.

Thanking the crowd once more, she said: “I’m sorry if we played a note wrong or whatever, but thank you so much for being so nice to us.”

Needless to say the appreciation was roared back towards her direction. Time has not changed Portishead, but they have evolved into a band so big, so important, that it’s nice to see that they haven’t become arrogant and pretentious. Maybe they could sit down and have a chat with Julian Cope. [Strange Glue Music]

I’m not sure if Zach caught OM‘s set or not, but he did just see them when they were here in November.

GZA performed Liquid Swords – just like he will at Knitting Factory in NYC very soon.

Thurston Moore also has a show coming up at Knitting Factory.

Silver Apples played Knitting Factory in September.

Now I’m just waiting for that Portishead show announcement. Where will they play? Webster Hall? Terminal 5? Roseland, Hammerstein?
