Primus at Madison Square Garden
Primus at Madison Square Garden (more by Katherine Tyler)

Primus have had a long history with Rush over the years, as the two bands toured together in 1992, and Primus having covered Rush numerous times in the past. Now, the band is paying tribute to them on tour this summer, as part of their "Rush - A Tribute to Kings" tour, which will find the band performing Rush's 1977 LP A Farewell to Kings in its entirety, hitting NYC, Philly, LA, Asbury Park, Baltimore, Toronto, Phoenix, Cleveland, Boston, and lots more. In addition, the tour features some killer openers, with Battles, Wolfmother, and The Sword supporting the band on select dates.

Les Claypool discussed the upcoming tour in a statement, revealing the concept was supposed to take shape last year, before the band was asked to open for Slayer last fall:

"A little over one year ago, Ler Lalonde and I started kicking the idea around of Primus performing a series of shows featuring an iconic Rush album from our youth. Being that A Farewell to Kings was the first Rush record I ever heard, and that it contains my all-time favorite Rush tune, "Cygnus X1," the choice narrowed quickly. [...] Geddy, Alex and Neil had been superheroes to Larry, Herb and I in our teens, so when we all became pals while touring together in the early '90s, we were pretty delighted; partially because of the musical geek-out factor but mostly because the three guys whom we had admired so much from afar, turned out to be truly great, down-to-earth humans, and like us, a tad eccentric.
The 'Tribute to Kings' tour will be just as it is implied, a respectful and loving tribute to three spectacular musicians, songwriters, legends and friends.

The NYC stop is at Beacon Theatre on June 17 (tickets), and the Asbury Park show is at The Stone Pony on June 20 (tickets), and those are both with Wolfmother and The Sword. Tickets to these shows (and the whole tour) go on sale Friday (2/21) at 10 AM local time, with a BrooklynVegan presale for NYC & NJ starting Thursday (2/20) at 10 AM.
