Pro-Immigrant, Anti-Trump Protest brings hundreds to Washington Square Park (pics)

Less than a week after the inauguration and the hundreds of Women’s Marches that happened worldwide the next day – Washington DC, New York City, and Chicago included – people gathered in Washington Square Park again tonight to protest Trump’s most recent round of executive orders. As Time reports:

Hundreds of activists gathered in New York City Wednesday to protest President Donald Trump’s two executive orders on immigration. The demonstration, led by the New York Chapter of the Center for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) was hastily organized in response to Trump’s executive orders restricting immigration from Muslim countries and efforts to curb undocumented immigration within the U.S. On Wednesday, Trump green-lighted the construction of a wall along the southern border, ordered the Department of Homeland Security to build more detention centers, and ended federal grant funding to so-called “sanctuary cities” that refuse to cooperate with federal anti-immigration efforts.

Speakers at the rally included City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Public Advocate for the City Letitia James, and other city officials. Pictures from the rally are in the gallery above.
