Protomartyr wrapped up a short Northeast/Midwest tour over the weekend where they road-tested about half their upcoming fourth album Relatives in Descent. Those included two small NYC area shows -- Saint Vitus on 9/13 and WFMU Monty Hall on 9/15 -- before hitting Basilica Soundscape on Saturday (9/16). (They were also supposed to open for The Fall at Baby's All Right on 9/12, but then those shows were canceled.) I went to both the small shows, and Vitus was probably the better performance, while Monty Hall (which was with their old tourmates and drinking buddies The Gotobeds) was more fun. At both, the band were tight and locked in -- drummer Alex Leonard, bassist Scott Davidson and guitarist Greg Ahee are all amazing, creative musicians and a lot of fun to watch do their thing. Joe Casey is loosening up as a frontman, cracking jokes and even shaking a leg at one point. "That was me dancing," Joe joked at Monty Hall. "I fear it's only going to get worse as the tour goes on."

Of the Relatives in Descent material, they played both singles "A Private Understanding," that's odd rhythms make a little more sense live, and "My Children" plus three songs that havent been shared yet: the ranting, stream-of-consciousness "Here is the Thing," the loping "Windsor Hum," and rocking "Don't Go To Anacita" which is arguably the catchiest song on the album. The rest of the sets was drawn more or less in equal parts from their first three records, and they switched things up pretty well between Vitus and Monty Hall.

Pictures from Protomartyr's Saint Vitus show are in the gallery above with a picture of the setlist and a few videos below. A few Instagram pics and videos from Monty Hall are also below.

Protomartyr will be back on their more extensive fall tour with Flasher, playing Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 28 with Weeping Icon also on the bill (tickets). This Friday (9/22) they play their Detroit record release show which is on a boat and also features ADULT., METZ, Tyvek, and Preoccupations. All dates are listed below.
