Athens, GA post-punks Pylon called it quits when guitarist Randall Bewley died in 2009, but for the last decade singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay has led Pylon Reenactment Society that includes Kay Stanton, Jason NeSmith and Gregory Sanders who all also play in Casper & The Cookies. The group perform Pylon songs as well as new ones in the spirit of the old band. They’ve now announced their debut album, Magnet Factory, which is out February 9 via Strolling Bones.
Produced by Briscoe Hay and NeSmith and recorded by David Barbe (Drive by Truckers), Magnet Factory features nine originals and two unrecorded Pylon songs from the group’s earliest days. One of those, “3 x 3,” is the album’s first single. ‘3 x 3’ was originally written by Pylon back in 1979,” Vanessa tells us. “We had fun playing it live, but it didn’t make the cut for Gyrate and fell by the wayside. During subsequent reunions, it sometimes crept back into our set, but was never formally recorded. Pylon Reenactment Society rediscovered it, started playing it live, and have made this bouncy little earworm our own.”
The video, which premieres in this post, was directed by Tony Brazier & Bill Cody, who directed the legendary 1986 music documentary Athens, GA: Inside/Out. You can watch that and check out Magnet Factory‘s artwork (by Pylon’s Michael Lachowski) and tracklist, below.
