Last night (2/28), Robyn Hitchcock played the first of his two NYC shows this week where he's performing his debut solo album, Black Snake Dîamond Röle, with Yo La Tengo as his backing band. It's been a while since Robyn has toured with a band, so that alone was a treat, but also to hear him unearth some of the LP's deep cuts (like the deeply psychedelic "The Lizard"), with fans Ira, Georgia and James as his band really made for a special night.

In addition to Black Snake Diamond Role, Robyn and Yo La Tengo played a second full set of favorites, including a few Soft Boys nuggets ("Rock N' Roll Toilet," "Kingdom of Love," "Wey Wey Hep Uh Hole"), some other of his solo songs from the BSDR era ("It's a Mystic Trip," "A Skull, a Suitcase, and a Long Red Bottle of Wine,"). They also did a few covers, including The Velvet Underground's "Run Run Run," Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam" and Katrina & The Waves' "Going Down to Liverpool" (which was written by his old Soft Boys bandmate Kimberley Rew though most people know The Bangles' version). The night finished with his gorgeous song "Airscape" from 1986's Element of Light. Setlist, videos and a few more instagrams from the Rough Trade show are below.

Robyn & YLT do Black Snake Dîamond Röle again tonight (3/1) at Bowery Ballroom which was sold out but looks like there are some tickets available now if you act quick. Robyn will be at SXSW this year, and has a terrific new solo album on the way as well.
