Samba icon Elza Soares playing special shows (Town Hall, Summerstage, more)
79-year-old samba icon and Brazilian national hero Elza Soares offers a searing, surging fusion that combines Afro-Brazilian styles with wiry, dissonant strands of punk and noise-rock.
That compelling quote comes from Elza Soares‘s 2016 BEST NEW MUSIC Pitchfork review of A Mulher do Fim do Mundo (The Woman at the End of the World). It’s emblematic of the kind of deserved attention Elza is finally getting. She has over 50 albums that Pitchfork didn’t review before they reviewed one which made their 50 Best Albums of 2016. Central Park Summerstage, where she plays a FREE SHOW in August, sums her up like this: “Brazil’s iconic samba singer, provocative persona and signature vocalist.”
Summerstage is one of a few exciting shows Elza is playing this year in support of the new record, all of them hip and high profile in the U.S. and Europe. You’d be crazy to miss one if you have the chance.
She’s in NYC THIS WEEK as part of Red Bull Music Academy, playing a show at Town Hall on 5/19 with Forro in the Dark (tickets are still available!).
