Savages' Jehnny Beth shares "We Will Sin Together" video from her solo debut (out today)

Former Savages frontwoman Jehnny Beth released To Love is to Live, her debut solo album, today which features production by Flood, Atticus Ross, and her partner Johnny Hostile, as well as appearances from Joe Talbot of IDLES, Romy Madley Croft of The xx, and actor Cillian Murphy. None of them threaten to overshadow Jehnny Beth, however, who feels in full control here. As I wrote in my review in Indie Basement, working without the constraints of a band pays off, allowing her to explore new sounds and styles that compliment her voice and persona. You can listen to the whole thing below.

One of the album’s standout cuts is the atmospheric, lusty “We Will Sin Together” and Jehnny Beth just released a very striking video for it. Made by creative director Tom Hingston, it uses the 3-D mapped image of Jehnny Beth that’s featured on the album cover:

Focused on an intimate encounter of male and female alter egos exploring pleasure, power and transformation, the film also features religious and mythological iconography throughout. Over five individual scenes, subtle references to specific moments in Catholic, Roman and Greek narratives are made – the Virgin Mary; Cupid and Psyche; Pluto and Proserpina; Michael and Lucifer; and Satyr and Hermaphroditus.

Hingston, who has also worked with David Bowie, Nick Cave, Grace Jones and others, says “The embodiment of different voices, and this whole notion of embracing the masculine and feminine characteristics of identity was the main starting point for us. The record has an attitude and a driving intent – there is a rawness from her lyrics and the production which doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard before.” You can watch the video below.
