Sharon Van Etten covered Leonard Cohen w/ Kevin Morby, debuted new songs at ACLU/PP benefit show (pics, video)

Wednesdya night (1/18), Music Hall of Williamsburg hosted the first of two sold-out benefit shows for Planned Parenthood and The ACLU. Sharon Van Etten headlined the sold out show, and Beirut, Kevin Morby, Daniel Rossen (of Grizzly Bear), and Hand Habits also played. Check out pictures in the gallery above. Even though Sharon’s been busy lately with things like scoring films and acting in The OA (and getting ready to have a kid), she’s apparently had time to work on some new songs, too. We’re not sure of the names yet, but you can watch videos of Sharon performing two new songs below. Sharon also joined Kevin Morby and Hand Habits to cover Leonard Cohen’s song “Passing Through.” Watch that below as well.

Tonight’s second benefit show happens at Rough Trade, with some of the same artists, as well as Helado Negro and Ruth Garbus. The flyer for both shows is below.

On Valentines Day there’s another Planned Parenthood benefit at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Reigning Sound, Kid Congo, Eleanor Friedberger,, a Cult of Youth / Wind Atlas collaboration, SKATERS, Austin Brown (of Parquet Courts), Delicate Steve, Cassie Ramone, Gary Lucas, Frankie Rose, Rev Vince Anderson, Alana Amram, Daddy Long Legs, Breanna Barbara, Baby Shakes, Escape-Ism (Ian Svenonius solo project), and more TBA, plus DJ sets by Ian Svenonius and Jonathan Toubin.

In Washington DC this weekend, another big Planned Parenthood benefit follows The Woman’s March on Washington at 9:30 Club. The National, Sleater-Kinney, and Ted Leo are among those on the lineup.
