Sigur Ros members released the circus-themed 'Circe,' the soundtrack to BBC documentary "The Show of Shows" (videos)

Circe

I’m a big ole sucker for Sigur Rós and Sigur Rós-related projects, so I was happy to see an email in my inbox this morning about today’s release of an album called “Circe”, a Sigur Rós-related project. “Circe” is a new instrumental album recorded by Georg Holm (bassist for Sigur Rós), Orri Páll Dýrason (drummer for Sigur Rós), Kjartan Holm (Sigur Rós touring guitarist), and composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson. The 72-minute instrumental album was inspired by 100 years of archival footage of vaudeville, circuses and carnivals, things for which I am also keen on as the older you get in those facets of entertainment, the creepier the footage gets. (Except for circuses. I hate circuses.)

A pulsating work throughout, the 14 track album, which has been made to accompany the forthcoming BBC documentary film “The Show of Shows”, was written and recorded at Sigur Ros’s new studio space in Reykjavik, and features contributions from the celebrated South Iceland Chamber Choir.

The documentary was commissioned for BBC Storyville and will not be seen on television screens until next year. However, one off screenings took place in the UK, first at the Barbican and then at the Latitude Festival in July, with each showing accompanied by Q&As with Georg and Orri and the film’s producers in discussion with the author Andrew Smith.

The digital album was released today (8/21) on Sigur Rós’ own Krunk imprint. A double vinyl and a CD release will drop on September 11.

Your man Klaus is also a big ole opponent of violence and abuse against animals and I find circuses to be some of the most vile, disgraceful, and appalling arenas of sanctioned cruelty to animals out there. “Show of Shows” contains footage of morally reprehensible treatment of animals. Although I am positive the folks involved with “Circe” are just as opposed to animal cruelty as I am, be warned that the film definitely includes vintage animal cruelty.
