Slow Club have a new album, videos, tour dates

by Bill Pearis

Slow Club

Immensely likable UK duo Slow Club are back with their second album, Paradise, out next week on Moshi Moshi and will be over in November for a couple NYC shows: 11/3 at Mercury Lounge and 11/4 at The Rock Shop. They’re also playing The Echo in Los Angeles on November 6. Expect a proper North American tour in the new year.

The new album expands greatly upon the folk-pop of their debut, Yeah, So, giving them a much bigger sound, perhaps due in part to producer Luke Smith (who was in short-lived but great mid-’00s band Clor). It still sounds like Slow Club, mind you: winsome, charming, joyous. Just don’t call them twee:

Music Broke My Bones: What’s your opinion of the twee tag that is sometimes tossed about, is this something you want to embrace or react against?

Slow Club: React against massively, I will kick you in the balls if you say we are! When we were a very new band we were very young and our song writing was a little simple I suppose, that got called twee, then lazy journalists carried it on even though I was stood up kicking ten shits out of the drums every night and Charles guitar sound was so loud I’ve lost some hearing in one of my ears… none of the lyrics were ever meant to be sweet, not in the slightest, I’m a real raincloud, not sweet or twee in the slightest! The new album isn’t a total F-U-we-aren’t-twee but it was made with that in the back of our minds and hopefully it will silence the really rubbish writers who just copy and paste what one person said in 2007…

Music Broke My Bones: Were the slightly electronic elements of Paradise a deliberate move to tackle this?

Slow Club: Not really, we both listen to a lot of different music since Yeah, So, our tastes have changed and therefore what excites us in the studio has. It was just a natural progression for these songs.

You can listen to the entirety of Paradise over at NME.com and watch videos for its two singles, “Two Cousins” and “Where I’m Waking,” at the bottom of this post, along with all upcoming Slow Club tour dates.
