"It's fucking hot, isn't it," Rachel Goswell exclaimed at Slowdive's show at House of Vans on Saturday. With temperatures in the 90s that day, and only an (admittedly massive) fan to cool the warehouse space that is HoV, it was indeed fucking hot. Despite this, or maybe the waves of heat combined with the crests of beautiful guitars, Slowdive were transcendent, easily the best of the three shows I've seen since they reunited. It was also the best-sounding show I've ever experienced at House of Vans. And the hottest.

The setlist was about evenly split between '90s-era favorites like "Catch the Breeze," "Souvlaki Space Station," and "Alison" and songs from last year's terrific self-titled comeback LP. "Sugar the Pill," from that album, may have even gotten the most cheers of the night. Things ended with a cover of Syd Barrett's "Golden Hair" which they played against a projection of Syd's head. No encore (a commenter notes that there were encore songs on the printed setlist), but I think people were in, some ways, ok with escaping the heat. A lovely evening.

Slowdive picked openers Vorhees (aka Dana Wachs whose ethereal sound made for a nice opener) and Farrows (house producer John Hergut who I missed) and pictures of their sets and the whole evening are in the gallery above. Setlist is below.

House of Vans, which will close for good at the end of this season, next hosts Suicidal Tendencies on July 14 (RSVP is full).
