The Smashing Pumpkins prefaced their sorta-reunion tour (with original members Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin in tow) with a couple warm-up shows, and the proper tour began last night (7/12) at Glendale, AZ's Gila River Arena. They had hinted at some covers for this tour, including "Stairway to Heaven," though some people wondered if that was just Billy trolling. It was not trolling, as the band played it last night. They also covered David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and did their version of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide," plus tons of classics, including the deep cut "Blew Away" (the b-side of the "Disarm" single), which they hadn't played live since 2000. They also did "Disarm," "Rocket," "Rhinoceros," "Zero," "Soma," "Mayonaise," "Tonight, Tonight," "Cherub Rock," "1989," "Today," the "reunion" lineup's new song "Solara," and still much more. Check out the full setlist, and videos of the Zeppelin and Bowie covers, below.
Almost all dates on the tour (including MSG on 8/1) are being opened by Metric, who released new song "Dark Saturday" last night.
