Snail Mail released LP 'Lush' (stream it), covered Coldplay at MHOW (pics, video)
Snail Mail‘s debut album, Lush, was released today via Matador, and the full album delivers on the promise shown by the great singles “Pristine” and “Heat Wave.” Each of the album’s ten tracks showcases Lindsey Jordan’s strong ability for crafting sharp, earworm indie rock melodies, and she balances this with heavily personal lyrics about love and uncertainty. Lindsey and her backing band played a record release show at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday (6/7) as part of the Northside Festival. In addition to her own songs, Snail Mail also performed a cover of Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” (from 2005 album X&Y). It’s a wonderful cover, as Snail Mail’s version swaps expansive pianos heard in the original for light guitar arpeggios. This cover might not come as a surprise to some, as Lindsey has even compared some songs from Lush to Coldplay in interviews. Openers for Snail Mail at the MHOW show was psych-folk duo Lionlimb, and Montreal jangle pop outfit Corridor, the latter of which we didn’t get to photograph, but who will play BrooklynVegan’s Northside showcase at Elsewhere on Saturday (6/9). Tickets are nearly sold out but we will also take limited Northside badges.
Snail Mail are currently on tour, and will return to NYC in September to open for Alvvays at Warsaw on September 27 & 28 with Hatchie also on the bill (tickets). They’ll also be in NYC next year as part of the all-Matador triple bill of Car Seat Headrest and headliners Interpol at Madison Square Garden on February 16.
