East Village bar Hi-Fi has been hosting some some interesting shows lately, among them a series of tribute nights. On June 8 they'll host a tribute to UK cult pop act Prefab Sprout, featuring Sondre Lerche (whose song "I Cannot Let You Go" is a tribute already), Skylar Spence, Franklin Bruno, Verena Weisendanger, Gary Burton, Mick Lewis, and Jen Goma (whose band Roman à Clef is pretty Sprouty), with a backing band led by Dave Derby (Gramercy Arms/Dambuilders). The show is free but you can guarantee entry with a "donation" that will go to the artists playing. UPDATE: You can watch Sondre perform "If You Don't Love Me" (rehearsing in his bedroom for the show) below.
The day before (June 7) is a 50th anniversary tribute to Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde featuring vocalists Alexis Thomason, Lizzie Edwards, Mary Spencer Knapp, Pete Cenedella, Ray Kubian and more. Donate for guaranteed admission
The week after that (June 15) there will be a tribute to Squeeze, covering 1980's Arbybargy and 1981's East Side Story in full with a host of singers and musicians including Dave Derby, Beth Wawerna (Bird of Youth), and more. Free but donate for guaranteed admission. The real Squeeze will be here this fall.
On June 22 it's a tribute to Small Faces with Richie Birkenhead (Into Another/Underdog), Marty Wilson-Piper (The Church), Mike Fornatale (Loser's Lounge), Edward Rogers, Paul Bearer (Sheer Terror), Palmyra Delran (The Friggs), Don Piper (A Don Piper Situation) and more. Again, free, but donating will get you in for sure.
There's an Elvis Costello tribute on July 13, but the lineup for that is TBA. Again, it's free but donating will get you in.
Tonight (5/31) at 8 PM at HiFi, Christian Felix and Shonali Bhowmik's We Don't Even Know variety podcast tapes with music by Holly Miranda. Other guests include actress Sasheer Zamata and journalist Kim Barker. That's free too.
