In the wake of Prodigy‘s untimely death, Prodigy collaborators The Soul Rebels have turned their free BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival show in Prospect Park this Saturday (6/24) into a Prodigy tribute. In addition to previously announced guest rappers Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, and Kirk Knight, The Soul Rebels will be bringing out surprise guests to perform the music of Prodigy and Mobb Deep. The Soul Rebels say:

Prodigy’s passing comes as a real shock to our band and organization. We’re very thankful to have had such a special and constant artistic connection with him over the years. Prodigy was so special to us as an MC, but foremost as a person. Every word he spoke was a reflection of his truth. As an MC, Prodigy was genuine, humble and honest about his story and art. He showed our band incredible heart, feeling and authority on stage and off, and Prodigy was one of the first MCs to shape The Soul Rebels to be able to operate in hop hop-centric musical environments. Over the years Brooklyn has been a home for the work we’ve done with Prodigy, and we feel motivated to remember his spirit and the music we’ve made together by paying tribute this Saturday in Prospect Park. We love Prodigy and send love to his family and to Havoc of Mobb Deep.

Neo-soul singer Goapele is opening and Natasha Diggs is DJing. The show starts at 7 PM and it’s totally free (though there’s a suggested donation of $5).
