Spike Lee shares short film paying tribute to NYC

Spike Lee‘s next film, Da 5 Bloods, arrives on Netflix on June 12, but ahead of that he’s been working on an entirely different project. On Instagram, he shared a three-minute short film, New York New York, describing it as “A Love Letter To It’s People. Plain And Simple.” Shot on Super 8, it tours various iconic NYC locales before honing in on sights that have been unique to the pandemic: masked people waiting in lines, the Samaritan’s Purse’s Central Park field hospital, the USNS Comfort, and the nightly 7 PM cheers for healthcare workers. It’s surprisingly touching for such a simple display, made all the more so, perhaps, by Frank Sinatra’s “Theme to New York New York” playing in the background throughout. Watch it below.
