David Byrne called his American Utopia tour, which was then turned into a hit Broadway show, his most ambitious stage production since Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense. Now that show will also be a concert film…in this case directed by Spike Lee. “Pinch me. This couldn’t have worked out better for this project,” Byrne said in a statement. “Spike Lee directing and Participant producing — two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.” The film is set for a release date later this year.

You can still catch David Byrne’s American Utopia on Broadway which runs through February 16 at The Hudson Theatre and features Byrne performing Talking Heads classics and solo material with his “untethered” 11-piece band. Some tickets still remain.

Stop Making Sense, the film, was directed by the late, great Jonathan Demme.
