Spiritualized played Kings Theatre w/ an orchestra & choir (pics, setlist, review)

Flanked by the Wordless Music Orchestra and the Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir, not to mention two guitarists, bass, keys, drums and percussion, Jason Pierce & co. played a rare outing as an expanded Spiritualized at Brooklyn’s Kings Theater on Thursday (10/11). The gig was in support of thier new LP And Nothing Hurt and was one of only two gigs scheduled in the U.S. (they play LA on 10/16).

Walking in to the Kings Theater from Thursday’s soggy weather had a majesty unto itself, but with a Spiritualized gig on the way, it felt extra special, like church – “come in from the rain, my son. We have many things to teach you.” As the lights went dim, the band opened their set with “Hold On” from the 2003 LP favorite Amazing Grace and moved into the Floating in Space classic “Come Together” for an awesome one-two punch to open the gig. The 30+ piece band, which included longtime members John Coxon, Doggen Foster, Thomas Wayne, Kevin Bales and Tom Edwards, kicked off the evening around 8:30 PM, with no openers, zooming through their set while a psychedelic background guided the audience through the tracks.

Spiritualized’s set came front-loaded with many of their classics, before they dipped into their new LP which they played in full, followed by an encore of more favorites. While new material is not much of a departure from their previous work, it fit in perfectly with the rest of the set, and had a grandeur is not replicated easily.

Pictures from the night are in the gallery above, and setlist and a few videos are below.
