St. Vincent @ The Chicago Theatre (pics)
Other than a few stray roadies, also dressed as aliens, St. Vincent was the stage’s sole occupant, wearing outfits that suggested a fembot out of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis.” In that respect, she took a page from recent tours by hip-hop artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West, who turned their shows into one-person theater, playing multiple roles with their musical accompaniment (whether recordings or bands) relegated to the shadows, heard but not seen. Another touchstone was the sci-fi imagery and gender fluidity dramatized by David Bowie’s ’70s stage personas.
Yet for all the emphasis on remote cool — strobes and layers of curtains that eventually revealed an array of disturbing videos — the show also held a blowtorch to the iciness. – [Chicago Tribune]
St. Vincent brought her “Fear the Future” tour to Chicago on Friday, January 12. This is a precision, theatrical one-woman show, not one where setlists change nightly: the first act features songs from her first four albums, and then she performs Masseduction in full.
