Steve Earle & The Dukes are releasing a tribute album to the late Jerry Jeff Walker, simply titled Jerry Jeff, on May 20 via New West. It’s in the same series as their Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark tributes. “This record completes the set, the work of my first-hand teachers,” Earle says, continuing, “There’s a tendency to think of Jerry Jeff around a relationship to one song,” referring to “Mr. Bojangles,” which was a hit for Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1971 and also covered by Bob Dylan and Sammy Davis Jr. “He was also such a great interpreter of other people’s songs. But my main purpose in recording this album was to remind people that he wrote a lot of fucking great songs.”

The album features 10 Jerry Jeff Walker songs, including “Mr Bojangles,” and he’s shared the album’s opening track, “Gettin’ By,” which you can listen to below.

Steve Earle & The Dukes will be on tour starting in June and will host Camp Copperhead on September 6-9 at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY. The songwriting camp also features Shawn Colvin and Anders Osborne and you can learn more about it here.

You can pick up lots of Steve Earle albums on vinyl in the BV shop.
