Steve Reich 80th birthday celebrations happening at Carnegie Hall with Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly & more
Legendary experimental composer Steve Reich is turning 80 this year, and he's celebrating in part by holding the 2016–2017 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair, a composing residency at the venerated Carnegie Hall. As part of that, there are a number of cool Reich-related events happening at Carnegie Hall later this year and early in 2017.
The first of these events is an all-Reich program at Carnegie in celebration of Steve's 80th. that show is on November 1 and features his "video opera" with Beryl Korot's Three Tales, as well as performances of his "Quartet" and a brand-new piece called "Pulse."
Another cool program coming up is called Three Generations, which happens over the course of four performances at Zankel Hall. Curated by Reich, it "explores the changing direction of concert music" via four performances by, you guessed it, three different generations of performers. The first features pieces by Terry Riley and John Adams and goes down on March 30. The second features pieces by Reich himself along with Phillip Glass and Arvo Pärt, which takes place on April 6. The third performance, on April 19, highlights members of the Bang on a Can Collective, and features work by David Lang, Julia Wolfe, and Michael Gordon. And finally the youngest generation will be represented by Bryce Dessner (of The National) and Nico Muhly. That performance is on April 26, actually features Muhly performing his pieces (one of which is a world premiere), and will also include a sure to be fascinating discussion between Bryce, Nico, and Steve Reich.
Tickets for each of those concerts, as with the birthday celebration and all the Reich residency events are on sale
, go on sale on August 29 at 8 AM.
Other residency events include performances by Kronos Quartet and The American Composers Orchestra, both of whom will be playing programs that include Reich's work. You can check out more details on the residency here.

Speaking of Nico Muhly, his work will be performed at National Sawdust tonight (8/18) before a set by the Iceage-related Marching Church. Speaking of Bryce Dessner, he plays on the new Bob Weir song, which came out today.
