Stevie Wonder, Chance the Rapper & more played Dave Chappelle's Dayton benefit (watch)
Dave Chappelle hosted the “Gem City Shine” benefit in Dayton, OH on Sunday which honored the victims and survivors of the August 4 mass shooting. Taking place in the city’s downtown Oregon district (where the shooting occured), CBS News estimates more than 20,000 people attended “Gem City Shine” which featured which featured performances from Stevie Wonder, Chance the Rapper, Talib Kweli, Teyana Taylor, and Thundercat. Comedians Chris Rock, Jon Stewart and Michael Che were on-hand as well for introductions and to show support. “Don’t forget what this place is about! Mankind learned how to fly in this city,” Chappelle told to the crowd. “Don’t forget what this place is about. When the rest of the country was all slavery, everybody was free in Ohio.” Sunday also happened to be Dave’s birthday, and Jon Stewart led a “Happy Birthday” sing-a-long for him. You can watch video clips of Stevie Wonder, Chance the Rapper, Teyana Taylor and more, below.
Kanye West was also in Dayton over the weekend and, while he didn’t perform at Gem City Shine, he held one of his Sunday Services in Dayton that same morning in tribute to the shooting victims and which Chappelle attended as well. Video and pics of that are below as well.
