stream American Pleasure Club’s “the miserable vision”
American Pleasure Club are releasing their new album fucking bliss on March 29 via Run For Cover (pre-order), and after they recently released lead single "what kind of love?", we're now premiering the visual for second single "the miserable vision." Like the previous single, "the miserable vision" sees APC moving away from their punk roots towards something noisier and more atmospheric. Here's what APC's Sam Ray has to say about the video and song:
Video:
I don't have anything really to say about the video. It's not a music video to me, it's never been. It's something textural that was toyed around with on an iphone & in imovie in one day back in 2015, when this album was first recorded. Because I didn't have any proper video gear, no cameras, not even a computer that could even run Final cut or premiere then, should I have torrented them, it was made as a kind of "placeholder" or a draft for a later video, to be filmed & edited once the record was slated to be released. Of course, the record never did get released (at least until now) & therefore a proper video was never filmed. All that's left is this simple, textural thing that was supposed to, at one time, represent something kind of indescribable about the point of the music, whatever the guts of it were, the blood. No one would really put out a video like this & say "hello, this is my art", but it is sort of a neat document, so many years later. a real "peaking behind the curtain" sort of thing. I like it more for the way it ended up connecting to so much of our later visual work - becoming a literal 'found footage' sample source within later teen suicide, ricky eat acid, american pleasure club videos (three of them, so far) though to explain how or why or whatever would be pointless. It just kinda "is". or whatever. there's a point to it, i mean, don't get me wrong - but explaining that would be pointless or counter-intuitive or whatever. kinda like a damned if you do, damned if you don't - it's pretentious to leave it unexplained, but it's more pretentious to elaborate on it (and it would somehow be worse than either to leave it entirely unsaid, and let this video exist properly as some sort of contemporary mission statement piece - god, no, never)
Song:
This track is the opening to the album, and one of the most important pieces of it, I guess, so much as you can understand & map out this record as a fluid work. The lyrics, especially - like, the song & thus album, opens with these lines "every year on the same day / they've declared it a holiday / let's light some trees on fire / in love with the miserable vision" that's very important to it all, and to understanding and i guess in that sense, then, falling in love with it. "i need your cum in my life / i love you like heaven / your taste sets me on fire / in love with the miserable vision" it's kind of the skeleton key to it all or whatever. maybe. thanks.
