stream Astronoid's "A New Color" off upcoming self-titled album

The word “genre-defying” gets thrown around a lot, but it’s not everyday that you hear a band really earn it like Astronoid. Their self-titled sophomore album comes out February 1 via Blood Music (pre-order), and opening track “A New Color” sounds like Mew vocal melodies with Deafheaven guitar riffs with Hum’s heavy atmosphere with Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World’s emotion. They sound like so many things at once, but it all comes together in a way that sounds seamless, never scatterbrained or overly ambitious. “A New Color” is both sugar-sweet dream pop and crushingly heavy metal, and it may surprise you how much it can appeal to fans of both of those genres. Talking about the new album, vocalist/guitarist Brett Boland said:

At the beginning, we were trying to outdo [our debut album] Air. It took us about six months to get into the groove. We realized we didn’t have anything to prove, and we got back to writing for the personal fulfillment of it. There’s a lot of pressure on a second release, so many of the lyrics are about overcoming self-doubt and the perceived opinions of others. We decided it should be self-titled, because this is us in our purest form. We ended up taking more chances. We were able to be Astronoid.

And about the new song, he adds:

We knew “A New Color” would open the record as soon as it was written. The mood of this album is much different than Air. This is the closest I’ve been to wearing my heart on my sleeve. It feels real and true. “A New Color” was a pivotal point in the writing process that solidified the direction we wanted to move in and a perfect place to start.
