Two of the buzzed-about newer bands in internet emo circles this year have confusingly been named Barely Civil and Barely March, and the bands clearly have a sense of humor about their similar names, as they're now releasing a split. "No one told me about this," Barely March joked on Twitter after Barely Civil announced the split. The split has two songs by each band, and it comes out August 10 via Halloween Records (pre-order). Ahead of its release, we're premiering a stream of all four songs.

Both bands sorta revive the type of emo that got big in Long Island in the early 2000s thanks to bands like Taking Back Sunday and Brand New (Barely March are actually from Long Island themselves), but both have a slightly different take on it. Barely Civil (who are from Wisconsin) have a cleaner, more melancholic sound. Of their two contributions, "Year of the Dog" is dramatic rock of the Deja Entendu variety, while "North Newhall" is quieter and brings in some Kinsella-style lead guitar and a post-rock climax. Barely March make rawer, shoutier songs, and they also contributed one rocker and one quieter song to this split. There's the pop punk-leaning "The Ending of Halo 3," and then the slow-building post-hardcore of "Live Fast Redux." Listen to all four below.

Both bands are also touring. Barely Civil are hitting the road with Heart to Gold in August, including a Brooklyn show on August 16 at Otherways Music with Good Looking Friends and Krissanthemum also on the bill (tickets), plus Long Island, New Jersey, and more. All dates are listed below.

Barely March are going on the Halloween Records Tour with Telethon and Brave You in September, including Brooklyn's Gold Sounds on 9/10 (ticket link TBA). All of their dates (also including Long Island New Jersey shows) are listed below too.
