Hereditary

stream part of Colin Stetson's score to horror film 'Hereditary'

The always-busy and super talented saxophonist Colin Stetson (of or associated with Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Ex Eye, and much more) has written an original score for writer/director Ari Aster’s new horror film Hereditary (A24 Films). The film stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne. Here’s the synopsis:

When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry. The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

Though he’s primarily a saxophone player, Colin incorporated strings, chimes and drones into his score, and we’ve heard a taste of the score where those chimes really get used to great effect. We’re premiering a more ambient track from the score, “Mothers & Daughters,” which you can hear below.

The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year and it hits theaters on June 8. The soundtrack comes out that same day via Milan Records. Watch the trailer below.
