Painted Doll

stream Painted Doll's (Chris Reifert + Dave Hill) debut album

As you may know, death metal legend Chris Reifert (of Death, Autopsy, and others) and comedian/musician Dave Hill have teamed up as Painted Doll and their self-titled debut album is due out via Tee Pee Records this week (pre-order). We’re premiering a full stream of the album ahead of its release.

The two musicians come from very different musical backgrounds, and for Painted Doll, they’ve channelled late ’60s psychedelia and stoner rock, and it works out really well (song titles include “She Talks To Mirrors” and “Find Your Mind,” to give you an idea of how this sounds). The nine originals do a lot of justice to that era, and their acid-soaked cover of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put A Spell On You” puts an awesomely trippy spin on the original. “Chris is a death metal legend from the Bay Area and I’m a guy from Cleveland who worships the Kinks. Throw in our mutual love for obscure Dutch bands from the seventies and you’ve got Painted Doll,” said Dave Hill, which sums things up pretty well. Listen to the whole album below.

Painted Doll are opening the Monster Magnet shows at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on 3/29 and NJ’s Starland Ballroom on 3/31 (tickets). Dave and Chris both talked to us about those upcoming shows:

Dave: It’s been less than two years since Chris and I first got together to jam one day in East Los Angeles just to see what might happen, so we’re super psyched to finally be playing songs from our debut album live for the first time on the east and west coast, including a few shows with one of our all-time favorite bands, Monster Magnet. We’re excited to have Erika Osterhout (Scolex, Necrosis, Trepanation, Extremity) joining us on bass and Tom Beaujour (True Love, St. Bastard) joining us on guitar. Also, at some point in the show, I am hoping to play a medley of Autopsy’s ‘Mental Funeral’ by myself on my Casio keyboard, which comes with some really great drum loops that are ready to go (this is admittedly something I still need to run by Chris). It would just be for when someone breaks a string or something.

Chris: Holy shit, these shows are coming up fast! And that’s a “good” holy shit, meaning I am really psyched to rock the fuck out of the stage with Painted Doll. It’s crazy for me to think of the whole chain of events that were set into motion after becoming friends with Dave back in the ancient year of our lord, 2015. Now here we are, with our new album, about to jump into your earholes and we have some badass shows set up with some badass bands, including the legendary Monster Magnet. We’ve got a cracking live band assembled now too with our buds Erika Osterhout on bass and Tom Beaujour on guitar. And if things get weird, Dave may just bust out that sweet Casio keyboard with the sweet drum loops for the aforementioned ‘Mental Funeral’ medley. That’s fine with me because that means I can hang out at the bar for some quality drinking time with whoever else is hanging out at the bar. It’s win-win for everyone!

In related news, Dave Hill’s band Valley Lodge announced a NYC show for Mercury Lounge on February 22 with Happy Chichester. Tickets are on Citi presale now and the public on-sale begins Friday (2/16) at noon. Dave Hill also appears at two comedy shows in Brooklyn this week: Bobby Tisdale’s ‘The Wards of Merkin’ at Littlefield on Thursday (2/15) and ‘PICTURE THIS!’ at Union Hall on Saturday (2/17) (tickets).
