Sam Evian (aka Celestial Shore singer Sam Owens) will release his debut album Premium this Friday (9/30) via the trusty Saddle Creek, who’s been on a roll lately with releases by Big Thief and Hop Along (pre-order). I compared the opening track to Kurt Vile and The Velvet Underground, and if you like that stuff, there’s a good chance you’ll dig this whole album. The band has upcoming dates with both Whitney and Teenage Fanclub, and fans of those bands are probably gonna wanna hear this as well. You probably have an idea by now of what you’re getting — laid-back mid-tempo indie rock with catchy, breezy melodies. Not to mention the album’s got some very nice layering, thanks to contributions by members of Here We Go Magic, Hospitality, Cass McCombs’ band, Delicate Steve, and more. A stream of the whole album premieres right here:

Sam Evian also has tour dates coming up, including the Whitney and Hoops shows at NYC’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 10 and Bowery Ballroom on October 11. He also opens one of the Luna shows at Rough Trade NYC on October 1 (but not the one where Luna is playing Penthouse in full). All three of those shows are sold out.

He’s also on the Jersey City date of Sad13’s tour, November 19 at Monty Hall. Tickets for that show are still available. All dates are listed below.

We asked Sam to tell us a little about the album, and he replied with a video he made using Google Translate. It’s called “hydrate,” complete with a bottle of water. (There’s no label on the bottle of water pictured in his video statement, but we think we can guess his preferred brand?)
