Cellars

synthpop act Cellars releasing Ariel Pink-produced LP (watch the "Nighttime Girl" video)

Los Angeles artist Alle Norton makes ’80s-inspired synthpop under the name Cellars. You may have heard last year’s self-released Lovesick. Ariel Pink did and he produced her new album Phases which will be out April 15 via Manifesto. His influence can certainly be heard on Cellars’ new single “Nighttime Girl” which has a very Ariel Pink-esque synth hook. Cellars has just released a video for the song, directed by John Charter, which has Norton being pursued by two spectres, when they’re not playing tennis or busting a move. Norton tells us:

“Nighttime Girl” is about being confident and self-conscious at the same time, and what it’s like to be young and finding yourself faced with uncertainty and the unfamiliar. I wrote it at a time when I had recently relocated and was determined to find my path without relying on a relationship or much guidance from others, in the interest of getting to know myself better. At the time, I felt I had no place to really fit in and found myself staying up late, alone in my room recording music. The video is an abstract, lighthearted approach toward the themes of self-assuredness versus self-consciousness, and day versus night, meant to reflect the title of the song.

Cellars will be at SXSW next week and then heads to NYC to play Communion NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall takeover on April 5. That show also features performances by JAKUBI, KLOE, Junior Prom, Aidan Knight, Walker Lukens, Little Fevers, The Living Statues, KaiL Baxley, Adam French, Michael Daves, and Jaime Woods. Tickets are on sale.
