Often seen as baby boomer relics with a couple enduring radio hits, Jefferson Airplane left a far bigger impact than they tend to credit for, and there's still much to be gained from their rich catalog today.

“It was all impromptu,” Donovan says. ”He had asked me to only bring in a song just emerging, not anywhere near finished. We would see what happens. It happened!” Today is also Donovan's 75th birthday.

The song will appear on Dr. Lonnie Smith's upcoming album, due this month via Blue Note.
