Tangerine Dream’s ‘The Keep’ score finally being released via 10-CD box set
Prog/new age/ambient icons Tangerine Dream are releasing a 10-CD box set titled Pilots of the Purple Twilight: Virgin Recordings 1980-83 on October 30 via UMC-EMI Records. It features newly remastered versions of the albums Tangram, Thief, Exit, White Eagle, Logos, and Hyperborea, plus two sought-after, previously unreleased soundtracks.
Those soundtracks are for the 1982 action-thriller The Soldier and Michael Mann's 1983 film The Keep. (Their score for Mann's Thief is also part of this box set.) You can listen to the main title theme for The Soldier below.
The Keep score has long been a Holy Grail for Tangerine Dream fans. The group made 150 CD copies of The Keep soundtrack in 1997 which they sold at a UK concert. It was then supposed to come out properly in 1998 but legal issues kept it from happening. In 1999, The Keep was included as part of the Millennium Booster album set which was released in an edition of 300 through Tangerine Dream's own label. It's never gotten an official wide release till now.
Pilots of Purple Twilight also features tons of other previously unreleased material: an extended promotional only version of “Dr. Destructo” from Thief; their full 1982 concert at London's The Dominion Theatre; and six tracks recorded for German television crime drama series Tatort (originally released on a 12-inch single and a 7-inch single in Germany only). Hyperborea, meanwhile, includes five tracks from the Risky Business soundtrack, including "Love On A Real Train," which is the group's most popular song on streaming services.
