Tee Grizzley

Tee Grizzley playing shows behind 'My Moment,' including SOB's

Detroit rapper Tee Grizzley left an impression around the country earlier this year when he opened the 21 Savage/Young M.A tour, around the same time he released his debut mixtape My Moment. He wrote the mixtape while in jail, and many of the stories on it are autobiographical. The mixtape’s biggest song (thanks in part to LeBron James), “First Day Out,” has a video starring Grizzley in an orange jumpsuit with “inmate” written on it, and the lyrics tell the stories of the robberies and courtroom trials that led to his incarceration. Talking to Complex about writing the album while locked up, Grizzley said:

I didn’t have any beats. So usually when you’re rapping with a beat, you’re really trying to ride the beat, and make sure everything sounds good with it. But when you ain’t got no beat, you don’t waste no word. Every word is meaningful, every word got meaning. It’s really better for me [that way]. I made my words more significant. They gonna touch people more.

I wasn’t listening to nobody when I was making this mixtape. I was just thinking back on times in my life when this happened or that happened. I was really trying to remember different chapters and make you think about it. I wasn’t thinking about nobody else.

Grizzley is playing his hometown’s Summer Jams 20 festival this month (7/23) with Jeezy, Migos, Remy Ma, Lil Uzi Vert, and more; and then heading east for two shows: NYC’s SOB’s on 7/25 with Maliibu Miitch and Snoopy Dinero (tickets) and New Haven’s Toad’s Place on 7/27 (tickets). Those are the only dates we’re currently aware of, but more may be TBA.
