UK industrial vets Test Dept began making noise in 1981, coming up a couple years into industrial's first wave. Initially signed to Some Bizarre (the label that was also home to The The, Soft Cell, Psychic TV and more), Test Dept mixed drum machines and synths with tape loops, chanting, shouting, and -- in true industrial fashion -- banging of actual metal objects and using electric tools as instruments. Their ambitious 1986 album The Unacceptable Face of Freedom is a classic of the genre. The band called it quits in 1997 but reformed in 2016 and this year returned with Disturbance, their first album in over 20 years that finds them having not mellowed one iota. You can stream that, and some of their older music, below.

Test Dept will be in the U.S. next week for the NYC, Chicago and Los Angeles editions of Cold Waves Festival, and will be playing a few other shows surrounding those appearances, including stops in San Francisco, Denver, Seattle, and Baltimore. Most of those shows are with Severed Heads.

The NYC show, which is at Brooklyn Bazaar on 19 (Day 2 of Cold Waves), is with Severed Heads, Paul Barker's Mini Dub Sound System, and Anatomy (tickets). All dates are listed below.
