The Flaming Lips & The Claypool Lennon Delirium @ Capitol Theatre (pics, video, setlist)
Since 1999's The Soft Bulletin, Flaming Lips' shows have been reliably gonzo psychedelic spectacles, full of confetti, balloons, inflatable robots, wacky props and perhaps few surprises. (Wayne Coyne riding a rainbow unicorn, though, was new to us.) The band's setlist doesn't change a whole lot, leaning heavy on The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (their two most popular albums), plus singles like "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" and mid-'90s classic "She Don't Use Jelly." At the Lips' Capitol Theatre show on Wednesday (7/30) they only played one song off their excellent new album, King's Mouth ("Feedaloodum Beedle Dot"), but they did cover Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You in the End" and "The Star-Spangled Banner." You can watch pro-shot video of a 45-minute chunk of their set via Relix, below.
The Cap audience seemed to be equally their for tourmates The Claypool Lennon Delirium -- aka the psychedelic duo of Primus' Les Claypool and Sean Ono Lennon -- who mixed songs from their two albums with covers of songs by Pink Floyd ("Astronomy Domine," which opened their set), King Crimson ("The Court of the Crimson King") and The Beatles ("Tomorrow Never Knows"). You can watch 25 minutes of their set, via Relix, below as well.
The evening was opened by Particle Kid -- aka Micah Nelson, who also plays in his brother Lukas' band Promise of the Real (who were there to watch the show). Pictures from the whole night are in the gallery above and check out The Flaming Lips and The Claypool Lennon Delirium setlists below.
The Flaming Lips will play Yoshimi in full at Riot Fest and The Soft Bulletin in full at Desert Daze.
