The Gotobeds cover Karl Hendricks on new rarities comp (listen), touring

The Gotobeds at BVCMJ 2015 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Pittsburgh’s The Gotobeds are currently working on their second album for Sub Pop which they’re about to record at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studios in Chicago. In the meantime, they’re releasing a compilation of early singles and demos, set to come out October 13 via Comedy Minus One. (Preorder vinyl/digital.) It includes their original 2012 “Fucking in the Future” demo tape, plus Mind Cure 45s “Ipso Facto” and “NY’s Alright,” as well as a recently-recorded cover of “Flowers Avenue,” which is a song by their dearly-departed friend and Pittsburgh music legend Karl Hendricks.

We’ve got the premiere of “Flowers Avenue.” Gotobeds frontman (and fellow record store guy) Eli Kasan tells us a little about it and shares some memories of Karl:

I had forgot that Karl Hendricks recorded his last full length at My War Matt’s studio until I walked past the record hung on the wall en route to do vocals for our cover of Flowers Avenue. I remembered some facts about my friend: One time I was in Sound Cat (the record store Karl owned) talking with Karl and Jason about records and mentioned I would kill for a beer, as I was hungover. Karl disappeared and came back with a six pack for us all share.

Another time when the store was still Paul’s, Karl was incredulous that I did not know the song “Hate the Police” by Dicks that he gave me the record out of the bin “for educational purposes.”

I cried like a newborn child singing my favorite song of his. I never got the chance to tell him how much I loved the song. Karl was an incredible guy and I miss him very much. Please play his records or read his short stories and be proud that you knew him – and hug your loved ones. It’s always a good time to hug someone you love.

Though I’ll always laugh…likely the nicest guy I’ve ever met was actively encouraging me to listen to a hate-song against the police, though he was right.

Listen to “Flowers Avenue” below.

The Gotobeds will be playing East Coast dates in late summer, including opening for Protomartyr at NJ’s WFMU Monty Hall on September 15 (tickets). The day before (9/14) they play NYC, opening for “some band we rip off” (that’s all they’ll say…who might it be?).

They’re also opening for Oh Sees in Cleveland and play Athens Popfest. All tour dates are listed, along with the new compilation artwork and tracklist, below.
