The Heavy Lowdown: Napalm Death covers Cardiacs, Nero di Marte had their gear stolen, weekend shows & lots more

By Doug Moore

Let’s get started with news:

Napalm Death (no introduction necessary, one hopes) have recorded a cover of Cardiacs‘ “To Go Off And Things” and are selling it for £1 on Bandcamp — the proceeds will go to Cardiacs frontman Tim Smith, who has sadly racked up considerable medical bills recently. (The two bands have a recent history together.) You can listen to the cover (and the original) below.

Misery Index have released a second single from their upcoming fifth LP. Stream it below as well.

Local luminaries Mossenek — featuring Mick Barr on guitar and Chuck Bettis on vox — have released their second set of songs in as many months, also via their Bandcamp. Surprise! You can stream that below too.

Chicago post-metallers The Atlas Moth have a song from their upcoming third album, The Old Believer, streaming over at Pitchfork.

Italian prog-death upstarts Nero di Marte — last seen on tour with Gorguts — recently had literally all of their gear stolen. The circumstances of the robbery were face-palmingly frustrating:

“In less than 30 minutes someone broke into our van and was able to take everything. It happened in broad daylight near a police station in Rome, despite there being a massive amount of police forces surveilling the area but, alas, no security cameras.”

They and fellow tourmates/robbery victims Void of Sleep, have opened an Indiegogo campaign to not only replace their gear, but to record a split 7″ as a reward for the help. As I mentioned earlier today, I’m not typically wild about crowdfunding, but this seems like a pretty reasonable cause.

Mastodon‘s new album (they’re still a metal band, right?) will be entitled Once More Around The Sun.

Now, onto this weekend’s live options:

TONIGHT (4/4): Powerviolence lifers Despise You play the first of two NYC shows at the new Silent Barn (603 Bushwick Ave.), alongside recent NYC transplants Magrudergrind, Backslider, and Grudges. Hull will finally celebrate the release of their Legend of the Swamp Goat 7″ at Saint Vitus, with help from Anicon & Iron Force (tix). Virginian rockers Satan’s Satyrs will hit Acheron with locals The Golden Grass & Ecstatic Vision (tix).

TOMORROW (4/5): Night 2 of Despise You in NYC, this time at Saint Vitus and alongside Full of Hell, Draize, Chainsaw to the Face, & Mother Brain (tix).

Sunday (4/6): Ambitious local black metallers Epistasis will celebrate the release of their new EP via Crucial Blast at the Acheron, along with avant-metal beasts Kayo Dot, Pyrrhon (my band), and White Suns (tix).

In the Invisible Oranges corner this week:

We scoped out new music by Ormgård, Cult Leader, Cormorant, Neige Morte, and the Thou/The Body collab. We also had our weekly East Village Radio show, which was brought to you this week by Irving Plaza; we gave away a pair of tickets to see the mighty Godflesh on 4/10. Tune in next week for more interviews, giveaways, and awesome tunes both new and old. Oh, and we ran down all the metal fit to buy, as ever.

I think that does it! Check out all those streams below. Anything else?
