While The Strokes were ringing in 2020 at Barclays Center, noise rock / post-hardcore legends The Jesus Lizard played a different, slightly more unhinged kind of New Year's Eve party at Brooklyn Steel. Frontman David Yow set the tone for the evening by leaping into the crowd within seconds of their opening number, "Puss." Once back on stage, Yow joked that The Jesus Lizard would do 14 encores -- they actually only did two but they were five and seven songs, respectively. While Brooklyn Steel's disco ball lit up at the stroke of midnight, the band played right though it, with Yow telling the crowd afterwards, "We missed the countdown, sorry! Oh boy oh boy oh boy, another year, that's exciting!" During the second encore Yow -- by then sporting a "Fuck Trump" shirt -- said Brooklyn Steel gave them a bottle of Maker's Mark and invited the audience backstage to share it with them. Anybody take him up on the offer?

The night was opened by Detroit's Protomartyr whose set included three new songs, which frontman Joe Casey introduced by saying they would make them a ton of money in 2020, and also said might be a good time for a bathroom break. Joe was in good form all night, joking after "Feral Cats" that it was "from the smash hit movie, Cats."
